Triathlon SBR Magazine:
We’re in Knynsa racing our 9th BIG5 challenge Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival
Paul raced his 23rd Knysna Cycle Tour mountain bike race which was race 1 of the 5 combined challenges. He was all mud splattered smiles after another “breathtaking ride through emerald green everything, dripping in sun soaked post rain sparkles – to the sound of happy birds.. ”
On the racing front our predicted leaders showed their form early with young U23 rising star Keegan Cooke drawing first blood by 1 minute over Dean Hopf who just last weekend won WP Duathlon champs.
Richard Lawrie another young and already decorated long distance powerhouse is training hard for worlds in Sept and looking fast at 6kg down since Durban 70.3, but is focusing on PE so most likely to be conservative all week to round out our predicted men’s podium.
The ladies battle is a very different scene with mtb ace Fienie Barnard smashing most men with her 3:34 – 17 minutes over defending champion Vicky vd Merwe but Vicky’s swim and run speed should see her claw that back by next weekend.
In the BIG5 lite the top 2 of each look exciting with speedo styling comeback kid Dan Howitz chasing Anthony Haralambous while glamour girl chef Amy Hopkins is stalking Michelle van Aswegen.
Tomorrow is road bike day for the Lite and for a few BIG5’ers who can’t sleep in on Sundays, like our editor.
Pics of Vicky chasing Fienie and Big Rich hanging on up Simola Hill. The last pic shows a very different looking Terraces section after the chopping down of the trees burned in last year’s tragic Knysna Tourismwild fires.
